Install WordPress on Windows Desktop using WAMP Server

Self-hosted WordPress blog offers many benefits when compared with free blogspot blog. But, if you just migrated from Blogger to WordPress, then WordPress platform will definitely look as an alien platform because you’re not familiar it. In order to get out of this situation, all you need to do is to start playing with WordPress but if you make changes on a live WordPress blog, there are chances for you making a mistake and all your files or settings may go missing. So, I suggest you install a local version of your WordPress blog so that you can test anything on it without having the fear of losing your live settings.

How to Install WordPress Locally on Your Computer using WAMP?

  1. Download WAMP Server and WordPress software on to your Windows computer.
  2. Install WAMP server software on your computer by following the steps.
  3. Now, extract the downloaded WordPress.Zip file. Now, goto C:\wamp\www and create a folder with the name “WordPress”.
  4. Move all the files and folders available in the unzipped WordPress folder to the newly created WordPress folder (C:\wamp\www\WordPress).
  5. Go to Start > Programs > run WAMP
  6. Next, left click on WAMP icon in the task bar and select “start all services”.
  7. Now, open http://localhost/
  8. Click on PhpMyAdmin and create a database for your WordPress install. Give it a name (say ‘demo’).
  9. Now, open http://localhost/wordpress and click on “create a configuration file” and enter the details as mentioned below.
    WordPress Local Installation Tutorial

Database name: demo (this is the name of the database you’ve created in the step 8)
    Username: root
Password: Leave it blank (no password required)
Database host: Localhost (leave it as it is)
Database prefix: wp_ (leave it as it is)

  10. Click on “Submit” and select “Run setup” on the next screen.
  11. Give your blog a title and email. Search visibility option doesn’t matter as you’re working on a local environment.
  12. On the next screen, copy the password and save it for future reference.

That’s it! WordPress has been successfully installed on your computer. You can now login to your WordPress dashboard at http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/ using your admin credentials create in the earlier steps.

Now, you can do everything that you could do on a live WordPress blog. This is a chance for you to test everything before it goes online so that no errors exist.

I know how to install WordPress on Windows Desktop using WAMP Server, and I can say that the tutorial is nicely written, and explains all the key points step by step. The method should seem very simple after reading this post.

I would also like to add that instead of Wamp server, XAMPP server can also be used. Some people say that XAMPP is even easier than WAMP. And XAMPP is not just for Windows, but for other OSs also including Linux and Mac.

On Linux, LAMP is used, and on Mac, MAMP is used.
