How to Fix Duplicate Meta Description Tags in Blogger?

Since Blogger introduced the “Search Preference” feature, blogspot/blogger users are noticing a weird error related to the meta descriptions. Duplicate meta descriptions are being shown in posts and homepage and it is causing a lot of headache. One tag is shown below <head> and the other is shown above <title>. So, if you’re using the ‘search description’ feature which allows you to add description tags for every blogger post.

How to Fix Duplicate Meta Descriptions in Blogger?

  1. Login to your blogger blog > go to Template
  2. Backup your blogger template
  3. Check ‘Edit HTML’ option
  4. Search for the below code. If you didn’t find the code, then skip to step 5.

    <b:if cond=’data:blog.metaDescription != &quot;&quot;’>
    <meta expr:content=’data:blog.metaDescription’ name=’description’/>
    </b:if>

  5. Replace the above code with the below lines. Those who didn’t find the code (in step4) can simply copy and paste the below code under the <head> tag.

    <b:if cond=’data:blog.url != data:blog.homepageUrl’>
    <b:if cond=’data:blog.pageType != &quot;item&quot;’>
    <b:if cond=’data:blog.metaDescription != &quot;&quot;’>
    <meta expr:content=’data:blog.metaDescription’ name=’description’/>
    </b:if>
    </b:if>
    </b:if>

  6. Next, preview your template to check it is not displaying any errors and then ‘Save the template’.

That’s it! You’ll no longer see your blogger blog displaying duplicate meta descriptions in posts and homepage. Just go one check for yourself – Open any post or homepage and view its source code (Ctrl + U).
